Licensing
Hauptwerk is commercial software, and you must buy a separate licence for each computer on which it will run simultaneously. Licences can be purchased through the Crumhorn Labs on-line shop. A licence key takes the form of a USB licence key dongle, allowing Hauptwerk to function as a full licensed version when connected to the computer.
You can also download Hauptwerk for evaluation or order it on CD from our website, which allows the full functionality of Hauptwerk (Advanced Edition) to be tested. However, the licence agreement only allows evaluation versions to be used for the purpose of evaluating Hauptwerk (and only for a reasonable evaluation period), and a periodic triangle is audible in evaluation mode.
By purchasing a licence for Hauptwerk you will be supplied with a USB dongle. Simply connect the dongle to a spare USB port on your computer to turn your evaluation installation into a full, licensed copy, removing the triangle chime. Your settings will not be lost in the process and there is no need to re-install.
If you have a licence for the smaller Basic Edition (previously named Studio Edition) and you want to evaluate features in the full Advanced Edition (previously known as the Concert Edition), simply disconnect your dongle temporarily (never attach or detach the dongle whilst Hauptwerk is actually running). When you launch Hauptwerk again it will run as an evaluation version, allowing you to try out the functionality of the Advanced Edition. Reconnecting your dongle your will return you to your licensed Basic Edition. No settings will be lost in the process.
Important: Please make sure that you do not lose the dongle since we cannot normally replace it unless you pay for another licence. If you break the dongle we will replace it for a small charge once we have received the original dongle back. Please also remember that we are a small company, and that Hauptwerk takes a great deal of time and money to develop and support, and ensure that you license Hauptwerk honestly.
You may move a Hauptwerk licence between as many computers as you wish (Mac or PC), or use it with multiple disk partitions, but you may only have one computer per licence actually running Hauptwerk at any given moment, with the dongle attached to that computer. In particular, the dongle is not hardware-specific, so you can change your computer hardware as many times as you wish, or re-install your computer as many times as you wish, and your Hauptwerk licence will still be valid and continue to work. This is the main reason that we think that a dongle is the fairest and simplest way to license software.
Hauptwerk's licence key dongle is also used to license some third-party sample sets. As with the Hauptwerk licence itself, these licences are stored within the dongle and so the sample sets you have purchased will work on any computer, provided that your dongle is attached to that computer at the time. If you buy such a sample set or you upgrade your Hauptwerk licence, Crumhorn Labs will contact you with instructions to allow us to update your dongle remotely, which is a simple procedure that takes only a few moments. The dongle needs to be updated before you will be able to install or use the sample set. As with Hauptwerk's licence, because the sample set licences are stored inside the dongle, there is no need to update the dongle again if you change any computer hardware or re-install.
Note that you need to be able to send a small file to Crumhorn Labs from your Hauptwerk computer, and to receive another small file back from Crumhorn Labs (each less than 10 KB) onto your Hauptwerk computer in order to update your licence key dongle. Usually these files are sent by email. However, if your Hauptwerk computer is not connected to the Internet, you can simply save them to a writeable CD, floppy disk or USB memory stick to transfer them between your Hauptwerk computer and another computer that has Internet access. Thus you do not need Internet access from your Hauptwerk computer.
If you are concerned about the possibility of losing the dongle, software or sample sets, we would advise insuring them. Specialist musical equipment insurance policies will usually provide cover for audio hardware, software and sample sets.
