Tools for creating sample sets

PipeLoops. Organ pipe sample looping, pitch detection and organ definition creation services for sample set producers producing sample sets in Hauptwerk format. Highly recommended.

Oberwerk. Third-party custom organ design software with GUI interface for Hauptwerk 2 and above, including library of 150+ dry-sampled organ ranks for use with artificial reverberation or in reverberant spaces.

Principal. Third-party organ design software providing a GUI interface for the Hauptwerk Custom Organ Design Module format.

HW Tools. Various free third-party software tools for use with Hauptwerk 2 and above.

Hauptwerk temperament generator. A free on-line Hauptwerk temperament file generator from Pere Casulleras.

MySQL. A separately-licensed interface exists in Hauptwerk for creating organ definitions within the MySQL database server. Please see the Sample Set Creator's Guide on the documentation page for more details.

UltraEdit. Text editor with XML syntax colouring and many advanced features. Highly recommended.

XML Marker. Freeware XML editor, ideal for editing Hauptwerk's Custom Organ Design Module organ definitions, with useful tree and table views.

oXygen XML Editor. Very functional commercial XML editor, also ideal for editing Hauptwerk's Custom Organ Design Module organ definitions.

Pete's XML Editor. Freeware XML editor, with tree view. Can be used for editing Hauptwerk's Custom Organ Design Module organ definitions.

Encyclopedia of Organ Stops. Useful reference for the classification of organ stops, containing descriptions of most stops likely to be found on pipe organs.

Incorporated Association of Organists. Umbrella organisation for organists' associations and individual members mainly in the U.K.

British Institute of Organ Studies' National Pipe Organ Register. Contains specifications of most pipe organs in Britain.

Organ Specifications in XML. Proposed data definition standard for describing organs.

Virtually Baroque. Huge quantities of organ music for download, recorded with Hauptwerk and other instruments.

Alastair Disley's pipe organ pages. A very quick tour of a pipe organ and you can hear some of of the common stops in action on the Virtual Pipe Organ page.

Organ Sound Archive. Aims to document significant British organs by providing sample sets in Hauptwerk format to their owners.

AGO Young Person's Guide to The Pipe Organ. Very informative introduction to the organ and its parts.


Other virtual organ software

jOrgan. A Java organ program which uses SoundFonts to produce sounds with an organ-like interface.

MidiTzer. PC WuliTzer Style 216 interface, using SoundFont cards or third-party samplers to produce sound.

The Virtual Pipe Organ on Linux. Linux-only organ-style interface for playing SoundFonts.

OrganTool. Small program which duplicates MIDI to give organ stop-like control for playing SoundFonts.

GENPO, the GENeral Purpose Organ . Linux-only SoundFont player with an organ-like interface.

Aeolus. Linux-only program to synthesize pipe organ sounds.

Sound Canvas Pipe Organ Project. Uses the Roland Sound Canvas external (hardware) MIDI module to produce the sounds, for which the program provides an organ-like front end. No longer supported.

Jeux SoundFont. Organ-like SoundFont for use with SoundFont-based virtual organ programs.

Bruce Miles SoundFonts. Synthesized SoundFonts for use with SoundFont-based virtual organ programs.
