Frequently-asked questions

How much does Hauptwerk cost in U.S. dollars or Euros?
We are a U.K. company so our prices are in U.K. pounds sterling (GBP). You can see our current prices in GBP on our on-line shop. If you live outside of the U.K. and you pay by credit card your credit card company will perform the currency conversion automatically for you using their own exchange rate, which will usually be slightly above the basic daily exchange rate to include their currency conversion fees. Please contact your credit card company if you want to check their exact exchange rate for the day. Your can use on-line currency converters such as this one from the Bank of Canada to give an approximate idea of the cost of our products in any given currency using the basic daily exchange rate. Set the 'From' currency to 'U.K. pound', select your currency for the 'To' currency and enter the price in GBP of our product into the 'Amount' field, then click 'Convert'.

Does VAT apply if I live in the U.S.A or Canada?
No. VAT only applies within the European Union (E.U.). Our on-line shop software will automatically determine whether you need to pay VAT based on your country. If you are outside of the E.U., please refer to the prices labelled 'excl. VAT' on our on-line shop.

If I order a licence for Hauptwerk how long will it take to be delivered to my country?
Orders are usually despatched within 3 working days (unless Crumhorn Labs is closed for holidays) and are sent outside the U.K. by airmail. Licensed copies of Hauptwerk require a signature on delivery. Post to most parts of the U.S.A. or Canada usually takes around 7-10 days, around 5-7 days to countries within Europe, or around 1-3 days within the U.K. Very occasionally orders are held up at customs which can delay them, but fortunately that is rare. We do not normally offer an option to send orders by courier because it is very expensive for small parcels. Please see also the policies section on our on-line shop for more information.

Is Hauptwerk compatible with my specific make and model of digital/electronic organ?
Since there are so many models of electronic/digital organ, and we concentrate on the software itself, we're sorry we're not in a position to be able to advise on compatibility with any particular make or model of electronic/digital organ. If your organ has MIDI then it will almost certainly be possible to play Hauptwerk's virtual keyboards from your MIDI organ's keyboards. However, the MIDI implementation used for stops, combination pistons/buttons and expression pedals varies widely between makes and models. We try to make Hauptwerk's MIDI implementation as flexible as possible to cater for most of them, but there are some cases in which it is not yet compatible. In particular, if your MIDI organ's stops and pistons are 'hard-wired' together, which is relatively common, then it is unlikely that you would be able to control Hauptwerk's stops and combination system independently. In order to determine compatibility, please look carefully at Hauptwerk's supported MIDI implementations, described in the MIDI implementation section of the user guide, and compare it to the technical documentation for your MIDI organ. You can also use a third-party utility such as MIDI-OX (Windows PCs) to determine what MIDI messages your MIDI organ is sending. If you have a computer that meets our prerequisites, which are also summarised on this page, please try an evaluation copy so that you can determine compatibility for yourself before purchasing a licence for Hauptwerk. Evaluation downloads and CDs may be ordered from our on-line shop. Many Hauptwerk users play Hauptwerk from their existing digital/electronic organs, so you might also be able to obtain specific advice about your make/model from other users via our forum.

Which Hauptwerk edition do I need and what are the differences between them?
The differences are summarised on this page, and are also identified individually on this page.

What do I need to use Hauptwerk?
In the very broadest of terms, you need a computer to run it that meets our prerequisites, which are also summarised on this page. You also need a MIDI keyboard or MIDI organ console and an audio/MIDI interface for the computer, such as one of those that we recommend on our prerequisites page. You will also need amplifiers and speakers (or headphones), and leads to connect everything together. You might also want one or more third-party sample sets to use in Hauptwerk, although a basic 30-stop English organ sample set is included to get you started.

Do you sell complete Hauptwerk systems and sample sets?
No. We only sell and support the Hauptwerk software itself. However, there are various companies that do sell complete pre-configured Hauptwerk systems including computers, Hauptwerk, audio/MIDI interfaces, sample sets, MIDI organ consoles and everything else you might need to use. However, some of our resellers do offer such systems. There are some other companies listed on the MIDI hardware page. If you have relatively little experience with computers and MIDI it might well be a good idea to speak to one of those companies so that they can build and configure a complete system for you, that you would just need to plug in and switch on.

Is Hauptwerk supported on Windows Vista?
Hauptwerk version 3 is fully supported on 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. Earlier versions of Hauptwerk are not supported on Vista. If you want to use Vista please make sure you have Hauptwerk version 3, which performs as well on Windows Vista as on Windows XP.

Is Hauptwerk supported on Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard'?
Hauptwerk version 3 is fully supported on Leopard. Earlier versions of Hauptwerk do not work properly on Leopard. Hence if you want to use Leopard, you must make sure you have Hauptwerk version 3. In general, provided that working drivers are available for your hardware, we recommend Leopard over Tiger, since it has significant improvements internally that are relevant to Hauptwerk.

[The only notable disadvantage of Leopard is that it does not allow an application (such as Hauptwerk) to fill the memory as nearly as was possible with Tiger, so Hauptwerk might not be able to use as much memory on computers with 4 GB of memory or less. Please note that Hauptwerk currently runs as a 32-bit application on Mac OS X, and so cannot take full advantage of more than 4 GB of memory, but we hope to produce a native 64-bit version of Hauptwerk for Mac OS X 10.5 in a future release as soon as possible, which will allow sample sets to use more than 4 GB of memory. However, it is still currently advantageous to have more than 4 GB of installed memory, since OS X will allow Hauptwerk to use nearly 4 GB if there is further memory available for OS X itself to use. Please see the enhancements page for more information about the status of the 64-bit Hauptwerk port for OS X.]

Do I need to buy a new licence if I change my computer or move from a PC to a Mac?
No. You can move a Hauptwerk licence between as many computers as you wish (Mac or PC), but you can only have one computer per licence actually running Hauptwerk at any given moment, with the dongle attached to that computer. In particular, the dongle is not hardware-specific, so you can change your computer hardware as many times as you wish and your Hauptwerk licence, and any sample sets licensed on the dongle, will still be valid and continue to work. Please see also this page from the user guide for more details.

Must draw-knobs be controlled on a separate MIDI channel for each division?
No. The initial configuration is only a default. You can use the General settings | Switch (MIDI) inputs and General settings | MIDI input paths screens to allocate any type of MIDI message, MIDI port or channel for any of the virtual switches (draw-knobs, pistons, etc.). Please note also that the current version of Hauptwerk is fully backwardly-compatible with Hauptwerk version 1's more restrictive MIDI implementation.

Why are odd percussion noises heard when draw-knobs are changed?
Use the General settings | MIDI output paths to make sure that no MIDI output is being sent by Hauptwerk to an external software or hardware synthesizer, such as a sound card's on-board synthesizer.

Why will Hauptwerk or its installer not work after using Windows System Restore?
We very, very strongly urge you never to use Windows System Restore after you have installed Hauptwek. System Restore habitually deletes or reverts some of Hauptwerk's essential files and not others, and can render Hauptwerk inoperable or prevent its installer being able to upgrade or repair it. This is not a bug in Hauptwerk because Hauptwerk has no control over System Restore's internal working.

I'm still using Hauptwerk version 1 and have just reinstalled my PC but I've lost my version 1 registration details or the version 1 software. Can you send them to me again?
Sorry, no. The version 1 registration details were not computer-specific and did not need any Internet-based activation. Your version 1 licence had no time limit and so you can of course continue to use version 1 indefinitely provided that you have your original registration details (serial number and key). However, Hauptwerk version 1 is no longer supported in any way so we are sorry we cannot provide any assistance for it, including re-sending lost registration details. If you want to keep using version 1 you must make sure you don't lose your copy of the software or your registration details. If you need any help from us at all, and you are still using version 1, you must upgrade to the current version of Hauptwerk (version 3). Version 3 can outperform version 1 on any given computer hardware, as well as giving enormously better quality, realism and features, providing that your computer meets the basic prerequisites. Hence there should be no technical reason not to upgrade. This page lists the features of version 3. If you have a valid licence for version 1 then you are eligible to upgrade it to version 3 at special upgrade pricing. Don't worry if you have lost your original serial number and you want to order the upgrade - we should be able to identify whether you have a valid licence.

How do I get my MIDI stops, pistons or expresion pedals to work with Hauptwerk? How do I select MIDI channels? How do I make a MIDI piston toggle the state of a virtual draw-knob/tab?
In addition to the Quick-start: stand-alone and MIDI input sections in the user guide, have a look at the forum posts listed here, which cover some of the the most common questions.

I want to re-format my hard-drive or move Hauptwerk to a different computer (PC or Mac). How can I do that whilst keeping my existing Hauptwerk settings?
Hauptwerk version 3.10 and later has native settings backup/restore/import/export functionality to do it for you. Please see the backups section in the user guide. For older Hauptwerk versions the procedure was as follows:
  1. Make a backup copy of your [Hauptwerk installation folder]/HauptwerkUserData folder to CD or DVD.
  2. Now set up or re-install your new hard-drive or computer ready for Hauptwerk, making sure that all current operating system and driver updates are applied and that it meets the prerequisites.
  3. Install the latest version of Hauptwerk for which you have a licence. You can find the latest versions for download here. There is no need to install old versions or re-apply old upgrades. All licences are stored in the dongle itself, and so will automatically be valid on your new computer/hard-drive, with no need to re-apply any licence updates.
  4. Before launching Hauptwerk, replace the [Hauptwerk installation folder]/HauptwerkUserData folder on your new computer/hard-drive with your backup copy. Note that recent versions of Hauptwerk might install to different default locations to older versions. You must do this step when Hauptwerk is not running.
  5. Launch Hauptwerk. Check that your previous settings are present. If not, the HauptwerkUserData folder hasn't been restored properly, e.g. it was copied to the wrong folder.
  6. Select the correct audio and MIDI devices for all entries in the left-hand browse lists on the following screens on the General settings menu: Audio outputs, MIDI input paths and MIDI output paths (Advanced Edition).
  7. Test and set the polyphony and any other performance settings for your new computer, as described in the performance tuning section in the user guide.
  8. Reinstall all of your sample sets using Hauptwerk's component installer (File | Install ... in Hauptwerk). Your previous sample set-specific settings should not be lost in the process.
  9. Load the sample sets and check that everything is working as expected.
